If you’re driving to Cape Tribulation for Jungle Surfing, there are plenty of fantastic activities to include or experience during your day. Listed below are some examples:
The only way to enter the Daintree Rainforest is on the Daintree River Ferry, which operates between 6am and midnight every day. This provides the passage and journey to and from rural farm land on one side to ancient rainforest on the other. It can take around 30 vehicles at a time (pending their size) and the actual crossing takes around 5-minutes. It’s a gentle, peaceful crossing with the chance for wilderness and wildlife watching. Passengers must remain seated in their vehicles at all times.
Alexandra Lookout provides the first (or last, pending direction of travel) opportunity to look out over the Daintree River, its surrounding delta and the Coral Sea beyond. There’s plenty of car parking and space for pedestrians, as well as some interpretive signage. It provides panoramic vistas taking in Cape Kimberley, Snapper Island, Low Isles and on a good day, Double Island and Buchan Point. As the pigeon flies, the lookout is 4km from the mouth of the Daintree River.
An iconic beach that appears today just as it has for hundreds of thousands of years. The beach itself is bordered by rainforest and mangroves and it’s well worth taking the short boardwalk to a lookout point on the northern side of the Cape, for stunning views of the coastline. The beach is wide and sandy, providing the perfect place to ponder the beauty and timelessness of this place. Named by Captain James Cook, who ran his ship into the reef near here, the beach attracts visitors from around the region, country and world.
This country is rich with rare, endangered and ancient wildlife, including a healthy population of estuarine crocodiles. The safest way to go croc spotting is on one of the guided wildlife cruises. Obviously being a natural environment, you aren’t guaranteed to spot a croc, but even if you don’t, there’s lots of other things to see. Keep your eyes peeled for kingfishers and other native birds, turtles, dragonflies and more.
At Jungle Surfing we love ice cream and we’re lucky to have two sensational ice cream companies in the Daintree. The Daintree Ice Cream Company creates delicious treats using fresh local and tropical fruits grown on-site at their 22-acre property. Some of the species they grow here include soursop, jackfruit, durian, pineapple, coconut and banana. Their ice-cream is served in a generous sample cup, with four scoops of different seasonal flavours, so there’s something different every time you visit. Gluten and dairy free options are also available, in the form of tropical icy poles. Refreshing and delicious. Just 3 km further south on the main road is Floravilla Biodynamic Organic Ice cream, where they use local ingredients and Mungalli Creek dairy products to create more than 26 flavours including their signature ice cream “The Daintree Rainforest”. Why not visit one on the way to Cape Trib and the other on the way back!
There are several rainforest boardwalks located across the Daintree and Cape Tribulation area, providing you with the opportunity to explore this ancient environment at your own pace. Most of these are elevated, winding through different types of vegetation with various lookouts, views and photo opportunities. All have interpretive signage, providing interesting information on the rainforest’s flora, fauna and evolution. Pick up a copy of the wonderful “Walks in the Daintree” booklet for only $2 in region or download a free copy here. It contains details of 23 different self-guided walks to enjoy during your time in the Daintree.
This is by far the best thing you can do while in Cairns. Words cannot express how much fun we had and how great the staff were that flew us through the canopy of the rainforest.
This was my third time zip lining through the Jungle with the team at Jungle Surfing Canopy tours. The guides are a fabulous bunch of nature lovers and adventure seekers, who are keen on sharing their stories of the rainforest and all its little and large inhabitants, whilst ensuring you have just a wonderful and exhilarating time ziplining through the jungle and seeing this amazing world heritage area from a different perspective. Can totally recommend to anyone who loves nature and some soft adventure, being totally looked after by an awesome bunch of people. I recommend you stay overnight in the Cape Tribulation area to really soak up this amazing place. Will be back!!
As a family, this was our first experience in any zip line activity. The tour was full of useful information about the rainforest. With excellent guidance on the ropes. Every care was taken to ensure we were comfortable at each stage. The last zip line was a race to the finish and an awesome end to the tour. Leaving me looking for more. I will certainly go back next time I’m in Port Douglas. Thanks, guys for such a cool experience making me and my family feel completely safe.
This is a must do. The best way to get up close to the Daintree. I’m a big scaredy-cat but found this adventure didn’t push me out of my comfort zone too much. Always felt I was in good hands. My 11yo & 9yo loved it!
My girlfriend and I did Jungle Surfing on 9th September guided by Taylor and Suzanne, who were great at their job and very knowledgeable about zip-lining and the Daintree Rainforest. We both highly recommend doing this, as it’s not just zip lining but experiencing one of the most beautiful parts of the world at the same time.
